Florescence
Around six months ago I was sitting outside having a cup of tea when, in a horrible rush of realization, it came to my attention that I am going to die. I don’t know how I hadn’t realized it sooner… I suppose I thought that somehow it wouldn’t happen to me.
For a few days I was horrified, struggling to accept the fact that living isn’t guaranteed. But quickly I came to appreciate in a new way how beautiful life is, because of its transience.
In planning this artwork I knew I wanted to illustrate the soft and beautiful passage of time. I painted magnolia-like flowers blossoming and dropping their glowing petals on the woman’s dress in an attempt to convey the gentle passage of life. Each day blossoming and then fading. All the more precious because flowers don’t live forever.
Thank you so much to Jessica Candradi for allowing me to take inspiration from her image for this painting.
