Knox College Artist in Residence Exhibit

Ruby Burke is a painter and photographer whose recent work delves into the beauty of the natural world. She has been profoundly grateful to have been the inaugural artist in residence at Knox College in 2025.

Throughout her residency, Ruby has spent her time trying to capture the unique atmosphere of Dunedin, with a focus on revealing the quiet, often overlooked beauty of the city. Her creative process begins with photography, where she captures moments of movement and stillness. These images then serve as the inspiration for her paintings.

Ruby has been pursuing  her dream of becoming an artist since childhood. At the age of ten she discovered her love of pencil portraiture and would spend countless hours sketching, captivated by the challenge of capturing emotion on paper. At twelve, she exhibited her first works – a turning point where creating became not just personal, but something she hoped could speak to others. She began painting at fifteen and has showcased her art through solo and group exhibitions, receiving numerous awards for her work.

This exhibition marks the culmination of her 2025 residency year – a celebration of the work created during this special time. She is thrilled to have her residency at Knox College extended through 2026. Proud to call the College home, Ruby is inspired to continue creating art in a space that nurtures growth and possibility.
